The service plays musical selections similar to song suggestions entered by a user (following criteria such as tonality, male or female vocalist, chromatic or achromatic harmony...). The user provides positive or negative feedback for songs chosen by the service, which are taken into account for future selections.

History

  • 2000: Founded
  • 2005: Launched by Tim Westergren as a free internet radio service
  • 2008: Started talks with the major labels regarding royalty issues. Launched a mobile version of their software (for IOS and Android). Developed a Facebook app to allow users to put their Pandora radio stations on their Facebook profiles
  • 2009: Announced that an agreement had been reached regarding the royalty issue, which would significantly reduce the royalty rate, making it possible for Pandora to remain in business
  • 2010: Had 700,000 tracks in it's library and 48 million users who listened for 11.6 hours per month on average
  • 2015: 1 million tracks in it's library and 80 million active users
